Many relatives of former Neuengamme Concentration Camp prisoners from all over the world have designed individual posters for the Space to Remember. In front of the Plattenhaus in Neuengamme, more and more printing plates are ready to commemorate those who were persecuted with posters.
In the last two years, the pandemic has largely prevented trips from abroad to the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial. Meetings at the Space to Remember could only take place digitally during this time. Many relatives have not yet had the opportunity to print the posters designed in memory of their persecuted family member themselves.
Now, when international guests arrive again for the first time in May 2022 to mark the anniversary of the liberation, the printing workshop at the Space to Remember will also open its doors:
Monday, 2 May 2022, 10:00-15:00: Open printing workshop at the Space to Remember
During this time, all relatives can visit the print workshop without prior registration to print their self-designed poster. You will receive an introduction to the printing technique that was already used in the resistance against National Socialism and the opportunity to exchange ideas with other relatives of persecuted people. The posters can be taken home, distributed further or made available for a presentation on site. We look forward to many international encounters and conversations!
Monday, 2 May 2022, 15:00-16:00 Public poster presentation at the Space to Remember
At the Space to Remember three relatives of former concentration camp inmates will publicly present their posters. Afterwards, all relatives are invited to collectively placard the posters they have designed.
Speakers:
- Balbina Rebollar Batalla, president of the Spanish Association of Persecuted Persons Amical de Neuengamme, presents the poster in memory of her father Evaristo Rebollar Fernández, who fought against the Franquists in the Spanish Civil War and in the French Résistance before his imprisonment in the Neuengamme concentration camp.
- The French Amicale de Neuengamme et de ses Kommandos has designed a poster to commemorate in particular all French deportees who have no descendants to honor their memory. Yvonne Cossu, honorary president of the French Amicale, will present this special contribution to the Space to Remember.
- Karin van Steeg learned only as an adult that 14 of her family members had been deported from Putten, the Netherlands to the Neuengamme concentration camp as part of a reprisal action by the German Wehrmacht. So far, she has designed posters for 12 of her relatives. In addition, she supports other families in Putten who would also like to commemorate their deported relatives with a poster at the Space to Remember.
Musical accompaniment: Olaf Schweppe, Oboe
This is an event of the AG Ort der Verbundenheit (Work Group Space to Remember) and the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial in cooperation with the Friends of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial and the Neuengamme Working Group.
Important: Please inform us by email to info@ort-der-verbundenheit.org by 15 April 2022 if you would like your poster to be displayed at the public poster presentation. Since the posters have to dry after printing, we will prepare all posters in advance for the presentation. We are looking forward to your visit!
