Now that the final concept of the “Space to Remember” has been approved and the seed funding has been secured, the realization process begins.
On 2 May 2020, the “Space to Remember” will be inaugurated on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps.
In the following letter, the “Working Group Space to Remember” invites descendants of people who were imprisoned in Neuengamme concentration camp to participate in the project.
Dear family members of former prisoners,
The “Space to Remember, Connect and Support“ on the site of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial is currently being completed. It is a growing and active place of commemoration for relatives of former prisoners of the Neuengamme concentration camp, regardless of whether they survived or had to give their lives.
The “Space to Remember“ gives you the opportunity to remember your relative who was a prisoner of the Neuengamme concentration camp in a very personal manner and in your native language by creating an individual poster design.
What happens to my poster design?
The poster designs will be transferred to printing plates with a laser. All finished printing plates will be on display on the grounds of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial at the “Place to Remember, Connect and Support” next to the prefabricated building and vis-à-vis the former brick factory, allowing for the names on each printing plate to be seen by visitors at any time. In the printing studio the poster designs will be reproduced and duplicated. The created art prints will be displayed outside on poster walls. Visitors can also take them with them to be spread beyond the Neuengamme Memorial. Thus, the stories of the former prisoners of the Neuengamme concentration camp will be made visible again and again and their memory will live on.

When will the posters be on public display?
The official opening of the “Space to Remember” will take place on May 2, 2020, on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the camps. Please send us your poster design by March 23, 2020, if you would like an art print to be displayed during the opening ceremony.

Nevertheless, poster designs can also be submitted after March 23rd. At least once a year printing plates will be created. They will be used to print posters during workshops held several times a year. The posters will be on display on the poster wall. You can also take them home with you.
The „Space to Remember“ will be expanded annually on the occasion of the commemorative events marking the anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of the camps. The history of each family will be preserved for future generations in the form of the printing plates and – as art prints – they can be taken to all corners of the world.
Around the globe and at home
Additionally, digital designs for the printing plates will be permanently stored in an online archive that can be viewed from around the globe. After designs have been created in the printing studio they will be scanned and made available for downloading from the online archive, thus making it possible to make digital prints at home.
Who developed the project?
The working group “Space to Remember“ was formed by relatives of former prisoners of the Neuengamme concentration camp. We came up with the idea for the project. Members of the Freundeskreises der KZ-Gedenkstätte Neuengamme e.V. (Friends of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial), the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Neuengamme e.V. (the Neuengamme working group) and the Amicale Internationale de Neuengamme have been add to our group of volunteers.
The Studio Experimental Design of the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg created the design and concept. The students developed their ideas for the design in close collaboration with us.
What do I have to pay to participate?
Participation is free at the moment because the Ministry of Culture and Media and the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial support the “Space to Remember” with fast-start funding.
In the future, we might have to charge a fee to cover the production costs of the printing plates. We will inform you of such changes in good time. A need-based fee waiver process will be put in place. In order to ensure that relatives for whom covering the production costs is burdensome, we kindly ask you to consider making an early donation to our project.
